Breaking Ground @ Blodgett Open Space

Colorado Springs' mountain biking scene is exploding with growth, and COSMBA is right there, fueling the momentum. With over 75 miles of new trails in the works and the thrilling prospect of a lift-served bike park on the horizon, the future of local trail access has never looked brighter. Don't just take our word for it – Singletracks recently published an article highlighting these incredible developments, showcasing progress made possible by a renewed and strong partnership between riders and Parks staff over the past three years.

The city is recognizing the potential economic benefits of investing in trails, following in the footsteps of successful destinations like Bentonville and Bellingham. COSMBA believes that as our trail network expands and improves, we're on the path to creating a nationally recognized mountain biking mecca. Imagine a world-class riding destination right here in our backyard! This vision requires a new level of collaboration, including potential public-private partnerships, targeted marketing campaigns, and increased resources for open space maintenance. The payoff? A thriving local bike scene, attracting businesses, industry, and infrastructure, ultimately meaning you might not need to drive to Trestle or Keystone to get those epic MTB vibes.

So, where does COSMBA fit into all this excitement? We're thrilled to announce that we're focusing our 2025 efforts on the bike-specific trails in the southern half of Blodgett Open Space, in line with the city's approved 2024 Master Plan.

COSMBA proudly supported the city's successful grant applications for the design, construction, and ongoing management of Blodgett Open Space. We'll be working closely with a contracted trail builder over the next two years to bring these incredible projects to life. Get ready for these highlights:

  • A multi-use climb trail paralleling the northern edge of Pike View Quarry, providing access to all the bike-only trails.

  • A flowy blue trail, similar in style to Chutes or Pine Needle Palooza, dipping into the reclaimed quarry area (construction will begin later to allow for regrowth).

  • A directional black flow trail, reminiscent of Fenceline or Upper Jacks, winding east-northeast before reconnecting with the climb trail near the trailhead.

  • A double black, semi-technical spur off the black line, featuring uniquely Colorado Springs challenges for the most seasoned riders.

Just like our successful collaboration on the Captain Morgan's project in 2024, we're committed to working hand-in-glove with the trail builder. We'll be providing input and expertise to maximize the terrain and slopes, ensuring the trails meet the needs of both the city and the riders who trust COSMBA to deliver exceptional local trails. And yes, this project will include grade-separated crossings and other exciting features to enhance the riding experience!

COSMBA played a key role in preserving Fenceline during the planning process. While upper Fenceline will remain unauthorized, it will still exist. Lower Fenceline, however, will see some changes where it intersects with city property, about a quarter mile after the "Lean Left" spur. Here, it will connect to the city's trails leading to the new parking lot (scheduled for construction this spring) just below the current Operations office at Pike View Quarry.

Once complete, South Blodgett will be the place to ride! Riders will likely park near Pike View Quarry and quickly climb to the trail hub along the quarry's northern edge, opening up a variety of exhilarating descent options.

COSMBA is currently finalizing the scope of work and our specific involvement with the city. Expect to see our volunteer trail work days at Blodgett from April through October. We invite you to join us for at least one day and be a part of building these amazing new trails. You'll be able to ride them for years to come, knowing you helped make it happen!
