What was the origin of COSMBA?

In 2021 a group of riders approached the City of Colorado Springs Parks Department with the idea of building an expert-level directional trail off Pulpit Rock. With the help of the Parks Department the initial trail was built by 55 local riders over 7 build days in just over a month. The high volunteer and business turnout highlighted the desperate need in our city for this level of collaboration.

The Black Sheep Trail was the catalyst for future projects and the foundation for a collaborative relationship with the city and our partners within the region.

Why does COSMBA exist?

We believe Colorado Springs has all the ingredients to be a world-class mountain biking destination. Our goal is to work alongside our partners to develop and sustain that vision.

How is COSMBA different from other groups?

The more advocates mountain bikers have the better. COSMBA is working alongside our partners within the city like the Parks Department and Friends of the Parks organizations for the benefit of all trail users. We are mountain bikers first but recognize that long term success requires trust and collaboration.

Why are you launching COSMBA now?

As a region our trail use has never been higher. The mountain biking community needs to take our involvement to the next level. That next level extends beyond advocacy and into development and sustainability projects. We must be building trails, we must be maintaining trails, and we must work with partners in the community in order to be successful.

What projects are currently being considered?

Completion of the Black Sheep trail in the spring of 2023. We are in discussions with the Park Department on adopting trails in need of maintenance including The Chutes, Arroyo Grande, and Nachos.

Longer term projects like the PikeView Quarry continue to have exciting potential. This project is currently in the feedback phase. The Parks department has been proactively seeking our involvement, and we are looking forward to contributing feedback during this phase.
